Ice Cream

4 years ago; one week after that night in the rain.
====================================

i took a look in the rear view mirror of my rustbucket of a car one last time before i got out and rang the bell to your house. hmm, i thought as i looked at my hair. finally i rustled my hair one last time. i like looking a bit scruffy; bed-headed. i took the small bouquet of flowers and got out of the car.

just as soon as i got out, however, you were already coming out of your house. as you sat on a bench and tied your shoelaces (i loved it that you wore cute pink nike sneakers), a kindly looking woman stood at the doorway. when you got up, you gave the woman a kiss on both cheeks and walked to the gate. from behind you, the woman gave me a wave, and disappeared back into the house.

"hello wise guy..!" you said, cheerful as a sunflower in full bloom.

"hey sweetness. was that your mom?" i asked.

"yes yes. auntie kettle she is to you."

"seems like a nice lady."

you frowned, albeit in an adorable way.

"she is my mommy. of course she is nice."

i laughed and you took my arm as i led you to the car. as you stepped in i gave you the small bouquet. you took a deep breathe to smell the fragrant flowers, and bat your eyes at me. i got in the car and we drove off.

"so," you said. "where are you taking me for our first date wise guy?"

"well," i said. "first, we're going on a cruise to the south pacific. then we'll paraglide over danau toba, go skiing in aspen, fishing in bahamas, and finally before i send you back home, we'll have dinner in barcelona. how's that sound?"

"ha ha. very funny. seriously, where are you taking me?"

i was quiet for a while. it was kind of difficult to concentrate on driving when you were beside me. all i wanted to do was look at you. finally i answered your question.

"well... we could go all cliche; we go to a movie and have dinner..."

you stared at me a moment. you narrowed your eyes at me.

"you sound like you have something else in mind wise guy.."

i smiled at you. in my most casual voice i said:

"we could go for ice cream and talk.."

you smiled so sweetly then i could have sworn my heart skipped a beat. you took my free hand (i drove an automatic; still do) in yours.

"i'd love ice cream", you said.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

"so", i said to you as i brought the ice cream to our table. we were sitting outdoors at a nice cafe nearby a lake. the sky was clear and the stars were out. i couldn't have asked for more.

"so?" you asked back at me whilst sitting with your hands under your chin. you had a slight blush on your cheeks.

"they only had pistachio and durian ice cream left. since i know you don't like durian, i took pistachio." i said.

"you didn't give me the liberty of choosing!"

"it's not exactly like you have a choice, am i right?" i asked back with a grin. little did i see back then that i would have a similar conversation with you 4 years in the future.

"yes", you said. "but you should have let me choose. it's the principal of the matter.."

"i'm sorry then sugar. eat your ice cream.."

you giggled, and dutifully dug your spoon in the dessert. i looked at you as you ate.

"stop staring at me", you said when you finally realized i was looking.

"i can't. you got me captivated" i said.

"you're not even eating your ice cream..!" you scolded playfully. "see, it's all melting and gooey now.."

"i don't care..."i answered with a laugh. "it doesn't really matter anyway. not here, not now.."

you put a hand to your face, and blush. it makes you seem all the more adorable, and it would be a gesture i'd see you do often in the future. for a while we just sat there in silence; you were enjoying your pistachio ice cream, whilst i had left mine to melt. i decided to have a cup of iced coffee instead. when you finished your ice cream, you pushed it aside, cupped your chin in you hands and stared back at me.

"what are you thinking wise guy..?" you said.

"what do you think..?" i asked.

"you're thinking about..me?"

i gave a grateful sigh, to which you laughed at.

"i just can't believe i'm here with you..", i said.

again you blushed, and put a hand to your face.

"i mean..", i said. "when you walked away from the table at the cafe last week i seriously thought that would have been the last i see of you. but here we are now..it's..it's dreamy.."

"love happens.." you said. "even when you don't expect it sayang.."

i snorted a little laugh. "you just called me sayang."

"can't i call you sayang..?" you made a hurt face.

"of course you can..i've been wanting to hear you call me that.." i said. i held out my hand on the table and you took it in yours. i caressed the silky softness of your fingers. honestly at this point i didn't know what to say.

"i don't know what to say", i laughed as i said my thoughts out loud.

you smiled that saccharine smile again and shook you head. "i don't mind.. you're saying so much just by you holding my hand and looking at me.." you said.

i held your hand tighter; i brought your hand you my lips and kissed it gently. you looked surprised but i could see you liked it as well.

"i think.." i said. "all this time before, i missed you being here with me.."

"how could you have missed me..?" you asked, obviously teasing.

"because i was in love with you..?"

you looked down at your lap.

"well then.." you said. "then i guess all this time i've been missing you too.."

you got out of your chair opposite and came to sit beside me. you gently put your head on my shoulder. some other people looked at us; a middle aged couple smiled, probably reminiscing about their own tender days together.

"wise guy.." you said, so softly it was almost inaudible.

"yes sayang..?" i said.

"before we go home tonight, i have something important to tell you.."

"what is it..?"

you giggled.

"i want more ice cream..!"

A Refrigerator Note

dear sugar
;

how far is really far sayang?
60, 600 or 6000 miles?
how would we measure it?
is it by the winding rivers,
or by the stretches of land,
that stand wide between us?

i think far is when i can't hold your hands,
and it's when i can't hear your laugh;
far is when i can't enjoy your lovely smile,
and when i'm unable to look into your eyes.
that is how far really far is to me dearest;
and i don't wanna be far away from you.

i love you sugar.

After A Prequel, Before Beach

a month before marriage, and thus, 'beach'
=============================

i looked at you across the table as you hungrily tucked into your dinner of tagliatelle with carbonara sauce. i was distracted to the point that my own dinner (beef lasagna with mushrooms) was pretty much untouched in front of me. you were enjoying your dinner so much that you only noticed me looking at you after a few more forkfuls of your pasta.

"hey", you said.

"hey", i said and smiled.

"you haven't touched your dinner sayang. are you alright?"

"haha. yeah, yeah i am. i was watching you eat."

"oh? and why were you doing that..?"

"just because", i grinned and finally began to eat my dinner. we were in a nice italian restaurant in Damansara. you made a stabbing gesture with your fork.

"eee. cucuk mata nanti then you know.." you said playfully. you giggled that little giggle i loved so much and turned the majority of your attention back to the tagliatelle carbonara, pausing only to take sips of iced lemon tea.

eventually we finished our dinner and just sat there, relaxing; we were dining al fresco at the restaurant, our table beneath an awning. the restaurant was situated in a nice suburb, far enough not to be too busy. the night was beautiful; it had just rained a couple of hours back, so the skies were clear and the air cool. the wet pavement glistened beneath the shine of streetlights.

"would you wanna have some dessert sayang..?", i asked. "because i'm definitely having some.."

you bit your lower tongue. you were clearly in a romantic mood tonight, and i could feel your feet brushing my ankles. you gave out an exasperated laugh.

"i just wanna have you, boleh tak..?", you said.

i kept on looking at the menu. "well, that has to come after i have my dessert. i'm having tiramisu. are you sure you just want me after this? you do have to wait ok?", i said. you kicked me in the shin, and i had to laugh despite the kick hitting the spot. it really hurt.

"oh did it hurt? i'm sorry..~" you grimaced and grabbed my hands. i just nodded ok, ok and squeezed your hands in mine. you made a sad face but burst into laughter instead. i motioned to a waiter and ordered my dessert. you decided you wanted to share the tiramisu with me. when the cake came, the waiter set it in the middle of our table along with two little dessert forks. we shared the cake, spooning (or is it forking? haha) each other.

"you do love sweet things do you?" i said as we finished up the dessert.

"yes. why do you think i love you?", you said.

"because i'm incredibly handsome and charming?"

you rolled your eyes playfully. "it's because you're sweet; and i love sweet things, like you said!"

i wiped my mouth with a napkin.

"so", i said. "is that all? i'm sweet?", i grinned.

you squinted your eyes, but you were still rubbing my ankles with your feet. suddenly for some reason you put a hand to your face and blushed; you were also smiling. i looked at you, puzzled, but for some reason comforted.

"i love you because you've given me everything i've ever wanted..", you sighed. we shared a moment of silence. my fingers toyed with your delicate ones. the skin of your hands felt silky smooth.

"wiseguy..", you said. "when was it that you realized you were in love with me?"

i smiled a little. "why?"

"you never really told me when was that. in fact so far in this past 4 years, you've never really told me precisely when it happened.."

i continued to play with your fingers whilst i asked you if you really wanted to know when it was. you nodded hopefully; your shining eyes never diverting their gaze into mine. i took a deep breathe; it wasn't much of a story, but i felt like i needed it.

"it was about a month or two to the date i first started to like you.." i said. you nodded gently.

"but..i'm sorry to say this, at first i thought you were really irritating, and that the reason we hung out together was because we had mutual friends"

"i know! haha", you laughed. "you used to tease me; it wasn't my fault i'm smart and sassy okay"

i smiled. "exactly. i was so irritated that you were more of a smarty pants that i was. i know i was the one who started calling you sugar because you always seemed to be munching on something sweet.."

"and i started calling you wiseguy because you always had this snide comments about me", you said, your eyes reminiscing. i gently squeezed your hands.

"well anyway..i guess you were so irritatingly smart and sassy, in the end i was charmed.. the fact that you're physically smoking hot was the cherry on top of the cake.." i said.

"so i began to like you, and day by day i'd be thinking of you more often. i think at this point i kinda slowed down on the wise guy remarks and comments.." i said, and you nodded your agreement to the memory. your eyes beckoned me to continue, so i did.

"it finally came to a point when i'd be quieter around you, and you started being quieter around me. it only really hit me, though, when one day i woke up in my room and felt this sudden pang of hurt as i thought of you...

"you were this beautiful, smart and just plainly amazing girl. i knew a lot of guys at college wanted you to be their girlfriend.. while i thought i had damaged my chances because of our previous smartpants attitude towards each other..

"so in part because i felt demoralized by myself, i began to act different around you i guess. so one day i called up a best friend and told her 'i think i love sugar'. she told me to go for you, haha.. but she also asked how did i know i loved you", i paused a moment.

you leaned forward at the table. "so how did you know sayang..?" your voice was calm, but in your eyes held an eagerness. again i took a breathe before answering.

"i think i told you that night 4 years ago, at the cafe.... but i'll tell you again: it was when it hurt to think of you; or to even hear your name out loud. it hurt here", i said and pointed to my heart. "and when you started to avoid me, it hurt a lot more..

"but now here i am talking to you; and we're gonna get hitched next month.. so i guess i didn't do too bad huh?" i smiled and you laughed. that laugh made me fall in love with you all over again.

"i remember you telling me that..", you said. "and i remember being afraid, that's why i just.. ran off"

"i know. haha. you almost killed me there and then..", i said.

"it was because i was already in love with you too at the time. so you could say i was charmed by your 'wisdom', haha.. and .when you suddenly became quiet, i missed you. and i began to avoid you because.." you paused.

"because?"

"because i seriously thought you didn't like me. that i drove you off... i was literally shocked when you came up to me and told me how you really felt..and at the same time, past hurts caught up with me. but i was dying to love you at the time..i guess i just needed some moments to take it in, you know?"

"eheh.. i know.." i smiled at you and mouthed the words 'i love you' in silence. you blushed again, and again we shared a comfortable silence between us.

"i can't believe we're actually getting married next month kan sayang..?", you said.

"yuppo. this is sooo life changing, haha. but i'm honestly excited", i said.

"reaaally? haha", you crinkled your nose.

"haha. of course. now i'll have you by my side 24/7.."

"hee. sukanya dia.. but i'm excited as well sayang.."

we shared a meaningful look at each other, a thousand swirling emotions in our eyes.

"you know you're the love of my life sayang.." i said with my head down. this was getting a bit emotional for me.

"i know.. i'm so happy this is happening wiseguy..", you said. and you were beginning to choke up as well.

"me too.. and it's only a month away.."

"a month away to the wedding..?", you asked, smiling.

"nopes.. not just that", i said, and looked at you straight in the eyes.

"a month away to the rest of our lives.."

In A Diary

===============================
4 years ago; 8 months into our relationship
===============================

we had just had a half-an-hour lunch date at the college cafeteria; we don't usually do, but you had to go back to your kampung after classes that day. when we said our bye-byes, you handed me a diary; your diary, a white, leather bound book with a sky blue ribbon on the cover and 'Evie' engraved in gold thread. it was a gift from your mother, you once told me. i've never read it, but i liked the way it looked.

"i want you to read this page", you said, and showed a page which you've marked using colorful paper-clips. "go through if you like; but that page paling penting tau? but please read them at home okay sayang?".

i thumbed through the diary. "what's in them? names and numbers of the people you've dated?", i joked.

"haha, very funny wiseguy..", you said and checked your wristwatch. "i gotta go now. remember; read it at home okay? muah muah dear. see you in two days okay?"

"okay dear..have fun okay? will miss you. will you message me?"

you got up from the table, slung your bag and made as if pondering the question. "you think?", you asked back and smiled. you kissed your fingers and put them to my lips.

"byebye sayang.. i'll message you when i leave and when i get there okay? taa.."

i said my goodbyes and blew her a kiss when she turned around to look at me as she walked away. i put the diary into my bag-pack and went off to my own class. i didn't pay much attention though throughout; my thoughts were on what was in that diary.

-------------------------------------------

as soon as i got back, showered and had a little dinner that evening, i went back up to my room and literally ransacked through the junk i had in my bag(almost throwing a camera lens on the floor) to take out your diary. i didn't know what i was expecting, but i had mixed emotions about reading through the diary. what would it say, and what if i found out things i didn't want to know?

but my fears were unjustified; you mostly wrote about your daily life, and jotted down daily anecdotes and reminders in your diary entries. they were amusing though, and gave me a glimpse of your life when i'm not around. i liked the way you wrote about your parents, your home and even your pet hamsters. those little things endeared you to me even more; and i already loved you so much. finally i flicked open the page you marked. before you wrote on it, it was a plain blank page; now you had decorated it adorably with girlie stuff: ribbons, pink hearts, and an awfully cute stick figure couple representing you and me. "wiseguy+sugar" you wrote above the stick figures. i proceeded to read what was written:

sayang,

first of all, *hugs and kisses*!! it's been 8 months already sayang. ;) it still feels like yesterday we were standing in the rain and i asked you to hold me kan? that moment has been ingrained in my mind and heart; i re-live it time and time again. 8 months isn't exactly cause for celebration, but i just wanted to mark it as a 'special' occasion. boleh tak dear? hihi.

i'm so thankful for you. i think i understand now what you meant when you said people create history when weaving love. because that's what we're doing kan dear? we're making our own stories to tell, our own histories to remember, and maybe even our own futures kan? i'm so thankful i have you now. i know some people say that at our age, we're too young to love. but who are people to assume or say things they don't feel, right? what matters is that we know it's real; we feel it's real. it's enough that you and i know, rite wiseguy? mmuahs.

i love you. i feel like i want to be with you forever. i pray to god we'll be together forever. sayang, remember i told you i've been hurt before? well, before you came into my life, i thought i'd never get over it. i thought i'd never be able to forget the pain; but i did, and i know you had a part to play in it. you gave so much warmth and happiness. i've never felt so loved before in my life (except from mama and abah; hihi). thank you wiseguy.. ;)

i don't know why i'm writing this really. i just felt like it. everytime i look into your eyes dear, my world becomes beautiful. i love you Muhammad Rafar. i really do.

*hugs+kisses*

your Sugar,
Evie Nadia bt Hakimi

i finished reading that page; overleaf you had pasted a photo of us together during our 1st month anniversary; we were at a Secret Recipe restaurant in KL. in the photo we were sitting side by side, and you had your cheek resting on my shoulder. both of us were smiling; happy. i found myself smiling as i looked at the photograph. and then almost as if by telepathy, my phone buzzed. a text message from you.

"i'm back in kampung. have you read my diary sayang?"

i quickly replied: "yups. sweetness sgt, haha. i love you sugar."

you didn't reply immediately. i figured you were probably talking to family members or something, so i let it be. but then about 20 minutes later my phones buzzed again.

you sent: "i know that wise guy :)"

i replied: "know what dear..?"

your reply:

"that you love me."

;)

One

3 years later
==================

i've been with you for 7 years now. that's 4 years of dating; and the past 3 years of marriage. sure, we've had the ups and downs. which relationship doesn't, right? but i guess i could say that you and i have reached a plateau in our relationship. if this was a graph, we'd be at the phase where it's flat, with no sudden peaks or valleys. it's not to say we're not happy; but we're content. maybe there's a reason as to why.

last year, we made a grand decision. one morning when i walked out of the shower, you were standing in front of the dressing table mirror with your t-shirt halfway up your torso, revealing that flat tummy i (and countless other women) admired so much. you wore a look on your face i had immediately recognized as your 'i wonder' look.

"you look fine sayang.. you're not growing sideways..", i said jokingly.

you were startled; i guess you didn't notice me when i came in. you blushed, and gave me a curt smile.

"it's not that..", you said. i waited for the punchline; but none came. you almost always had a cheeky follow up in your lines. i walked to you and embraced you from behind.

"you okay sweetness..?", i asked. you were looking at the mirror, and joined your gaze. you took my hands and placed them on your bare stomach.

"it is very nice to touch, i know..", i said. you smiled again and blew a strand of hair that fell on your face.

"it's flat..", you said. i nodded.

"i want it to be round", you said. i kissed your cheek.

"so you want to be tubby in the gut?"

you turned around and faced me. "no, wiseguy".

you hung your arms on my neck and gazed at me in the eye. the you said those words:

"i want a baby.."

i almost fell to the floor. but we talked about it afterwards, a long, serious discussion. we talked about how it would change our lives forever; but we also talked about how the timing was just right; we were married 2 years last year, and had spend the first 2 years of our marriage enjoying each other. and although when you mentioned you wanted a baby i almost lost it, i felt deep inside that you were ready, and surprisingly, i felt that i was ready. so after that discussion, we made the decision: we were going to try for a baby.

------------------------------------------------------

a year ago we made that decision, and we were still trying. we both went for check-ups to ensure we were both clinically fine and able to have a mini version of me or you. at first, both of us were excited; after all, we were both healthy young adults. the odds were with us. we studied the cycles, we attempted timing. we prayed to Allah to bless us with our first child.

but it's yet to happen, and not for lack of trying. both our moms said "belum rezeki lagi.." and of course they were right. however i was getting worried because you seemed so sad you haven't conceived yet. i could tell you really wanted this to happen. you were really eager to hold our baby in your arms, and nurse him or her and look after him or her.

what really worried me was that for the past few months you were losing your spark; you weren't as bright eyed and cheerful and chirpy like you used to be. you were still there, don't get me wrong, but you were turning quiet. you still joked around, and occasionally made your quirky comments. but the radiance in your eyes were dimmer, and it didn't sound as naturally when it came out from you. to make things worse, when i tried to console you, when i tried to tell you that all we had to do was keep trying and praying, you'd get irritated and often angry. we fought more than once about this whole having a baby thing. you'd accuse me of not really trying, and i'd retaliate by saying you were too impatient. i want one as much as you do, but not at the expense of the Sugar i knew. i mean, i know things would change and be different; but i just don't want you to turn quiet and lose that beautiful shining light you have in your soul.

-------------------------------------------------------------

all these thoughts were swirling in my head as i was driving aimlessly in the city. i usually had the radio on; but today i was driving in silence. it was late afternoon, about 1630, and the sun was hot and still. not the nicest day in KL. there was a stillness in the air that was annoying me. there was also something else.

last night we had yet another argument, which unfortunately escalated. and again, it was baby related. we were watching the television in our apartment, when suddenly you said:

"wiseguy, wouldn't it be sweet if we had a tiny you between us right now?"

i looked at you and smiled. "yes sayang, it would be..", i said and held you tighter in my arms.

you were quiet for a moment. "that's it?" you said.

that caught me off guard. "what?", i said.

"that's it? 'yes sayang i would be?' wiseguy, why can't you be more enthusiastic about this huh?", you said with sudden fury.

"sugar, i--"

"if you don't want a baby just tell me! but you're trying to be cool with it just makes it worse!"

you pushed me aside and burst into tears.

"sayang..", i started, but you cut me off.

"don't say anything!", you hissed.

i threw my hands up in disbelief, and looked at you.

"sugar.."

"diam!"

"sugar, listen to me.."

"just tell me that you're not really ready to have a child! i'd accept it!"

"SUGAR, LISTEN!", i said sternly and held your shoulders. you stared at me with watery eyes.

"sugar, i want a baby as much as you do.. believe me; but you have got to be patient. have you seen yourself lately? you're not smiling as much as you used to, and you're not as 'sugary' as you always were. what's the matter? you can't force these things sweetheart."

i opened up my arms to hug you; much to my hurt, you pushed me away again.

"so you're saying i'm too obsessed about this? huh?", you said.

"no, i'm just saying that--"

"you think i have to be smiling for you all the time? make you happy all the time? huh?"

"sugar, that is NOT what i said". i was keeping my voice low; in contrast, yours was getting higher.

"then what wiseguy? what?"

"look, all i said is that we need to be patient, and that YOU need to be calm about this.."

"shut up! just shut up wiseguy. if you're not ready then just tell me; DON'T say I NEED TO BE CALM", you said and got up. you walked to the bedroom and i followed you.

"sugar..", i said and reached for your hand. you turned around with fire in your expression.

"go away. get out and leave me alone. i don't want to see you."

you've never hurt me with words before; with those words, you just did.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

when you said those words last night, i was too stunned and hurt to say anything back. you ran to our room crying. i stood still for a few moments, and finally got my car keys and began driving around KL. i knew i should have gone home, but instead i checked into a city hotel and spent the night there. i left my mobile phone on silent mode, thinking that i did not want to interact with anyone. when morning came i hastily checked out and began driving around KL again. i visited some old haunts, found them depressingly different and continued my wandering. i wasn't really thinking much; i just wanted some quiet time.

you and i, we don't fight that often. and when we do, rarely would we say things that hurt deeply. so i guess i was in shock, mostly. i never expected you to say those words, which were echoing in my mind.. and heart.

go away. get out and leave me alone. i don't want to see you.

i genuinely wanted to cry, but i knew i wouldn't want to do that in public. i finally brought myself to a cafe in Jalan Ampang. i wanted a drink, and maybe something to eat. i sat myself down and ordered my meal. when it came i ate it, not particularly savoring the food, but just eating it out of necessity. it was then a familiar voice called out to me.

"wiseguy? wiseguy, is that you?"

i looked towards the direction of the voice and saw a delicate looking young woman, my age, with dark brown hair and honey tanned skin. it took awhile, but when the memory clicked, it clicked loud and clear.

"rosebud?", i said.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

rosebud was my ex; i dated her about 2 years before i met you. we broke up on good terms, when rosebud and her family shifted homes. i last met her on that day we broke up. on occasions we would send each other e-mails, but we had lost touch for quite awhile now. seeing her in front of me now was.. a pleasant surprise. we sat down together and talked talked talked. we reminisced about our memories and the times we spent. finally she got up to go, and we exchanged phone numbers.

that meeting cheered me up a bit... and when i realized i felt cheered up, it made me feel guilty all the more. i checked my mobile phone and saw you had sent me a lot texts; there was also a lot of missed calls from you and even from my parents and friends. you must have gone to them when i went AWOL last night. i decided to go home...

...straight into your arms. you cried and scolded me in alternate bursts. in the end when your tears subsided, you began apologizing for last night, saying you weren't being yourself and that you promised to try not to think or obsess about having a baby.

"i'm sorry..will you forgive me sayang..?", you said.

"it's alright sweetness..", i said in my most soothing voice. we then spent some time in the living room, not doing anything but being quiet. you finally decided you felt tired and wanted to take a hot shower and a nap. you got up to go prepare yourself. just then my phone buzzed. a text message; rosebud.

"wiseguy, are you free tomorrow for lunch? do you want to meet up say, at The Curve? i'm buying - Rosebud"

i pondered the invitation when you came out again, wrapped in your bathrobe and about to go shower.

"wiseguy sayang..", you said. there was a hint of the old sugary sweetness in your voice.

"yes dear..?", i said.

"i love you so much.."

i looked at you for awhile. "i love you too sugar..", i said.

"are you doing anything tomorrow sayang..?", you asked.

"i'm going out for lunch.." ...i am?

"oh. okay." you said. "with who..?"

i almost stammered. "with the guys from the Photo Club.."

"oh..okay..will you be out long?"

"why dear..?"

you paused and looked at your feet. "i just..", you said. "i just thought that...after you go for lunch, we can go to the lake gardens.. have ice cream maybe..?"

"sure..", i smiled. "after lunch, okay?"

you nodded and smiled sweetly. you left me alone then for your shower. i took a look at my phone and the text from rosebud again. i replied:

"sure. lunch at The Curve sounds great.."

i pressed 'send'. rosebud replied saying to meet her there at half past one. i glanced at the message. i could hear faint singing from the shower.

i sat there on the sofa in the living room, looking at the appointment i had just made with an ex-girlfriend of mine. it struck me then that i never mentioned i was married when i met rosebud today. then, like a sledgehammer hitting me in the chest, i realized something.

i was about to meet an ex-girlfriend for lunch; and i had just lied to you about it.

subsequently...
=================

i admit i slept badly last night; ironically i was also looking forward to meeting rosebud. for the first time in my life i just felt like shit. i felt i like i was turning traitor to my beautiful Sugar (which i was... in a way). i woke up this morning, glanced at sugar, who was still sleeping soundly, and choked back a tear.

just what in the world are you doing? you can still cancel that damned lunch, right?, i thought to myself. and yet i didn't. i never texted rosebud saying 'i couldn't make it'. hell, rosebud doesn't even know i'm married... because i did not tell her. god what am i doing?

i showered, and quietly got ready to go out. i didn't have anywhere to go really, but i did not want to stay home either; i didn't want to face sugar. lying once is bad enough. if i stayed in this morning, i just knew i had to lie some more just to cover up the previous lie. i wasn't feeling good about this.. but, dammit, i wanted to see rosebud all the same.

so i kissed sugar softly, and she mumbled quietly in her sleep. i caressed her cheek, feeling great oceans of love raging in a tempest in my heart. i love her, i know. but... i needed time out; i can't believe i'm saying this. i needed time out from her.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

i spent most of the morning at the my brother's restaurant, where i worked as the 2nd-in-command cook there. we were closed for the day, but i had no where else to go. i didn't want to see family or friends, as they'd be asking about sugar. and (ya allah) i didn't want to be thinking about sugar right now. i hated doing this, but i was doing it. i felt so complicated and.. caught. but i whiled away the hours whilst waiting for the lunch date i had by going through the restaurant's sales records and other miscellany.

i thought of rosebud. she was a pretty girl i knew back in high school; cookie knows her. she was one of the 'it' girls in school. we flirted a lot back then, and started dating half-way when we were in Form 4. i dated her for 2 years, and we had plenty of good times before she told me nicely she was shifting places and thought it better if we broke up as a couple and stayed friends. i took it admirably enough, and so that was it. after her i never really saw anyone else seriously; i dated a lot of girls, but never more than once, and always with no romance attached. of course i met sugar later; but then that's a story already told.

at about 5 minutes to 1 o'clock i got a text from rosebud, telling me she was on her way. so i decided to lock up the cafe and drove myself to The Curve. as i was driving sugar rang me up.

"sayang.."

"hello dear..", i said through the phone.

"are you on your way to lunch? say hi to the guys for me okay?"

my heart sank when she said that. but i somehow managed to maintain composure.

"sure thing sayang.. do you want me to bring back anything later?", i said.

"uhm, no. just you. boleh tak?"

"eheh.. can do.."

there was a moment of silence.

"are we still going out for ice cream later sayang..?", you asked.

"yeah, sure.. i'll phone you when i'm done okay?", i answered.

"okay. take care wiseguy. i love you. buhbye.."

"love you too", and i did. "bye..". i hung up, and continued my drive to The Curve. when i got there, i parked my car and went to the restaurant i was supposed to meet rosebud at. when i got there she was standing at the doorway, smiling widely and brightly at me.

"heyy handsome..", she said.

"heyy.. you..". i said.

"so.. hungry?", she smiled.

--------------------------------------------------------------

we talked a lot during lunch. picking up where we left off yesterday. there was a certain tension in the conversation... almost like a static, so heavy it would discharge a bolt of lightning straight at me. rosebud was being incredibly charming; then again she always was that way. throughout our lunch and chatter she gave me sharp glances straight to my eye. she would stroke the tips of my fingers occasionally, and i mentally kicked myself in the shin for letting her do that for maybe a few miliseconds too long before i pulled back my digits.

she also mentioned that she was single... news which i took almost indifferently. she said that she had broken up with her last boyfriend about 3 years ago (i wonder if it was at the exact same moment i said the akad nikah to sugar? what the hell?). but when she mentioned that she was looking into my eyes, and i could not help but feel...tugged that she was doing so.

we finished lunch. that was when rosebud, in a nonchalant way, asked me:

"do you wanna go for a movie wiseguy? or maybe you can teman me shopping?"

i paused a moment. should i? i was supposed to go out with sugar after my supposed lunch with the Photo Club boys. after a moments' thought which seemed to last forever, i managed to decline. albeit almost reluctantly... why am i feeling this?

"i'm sorry... but i have to be somewhere..", i said to rosebud.

"oh okay, nevermind then. it's been good seeing you again dear..", she said.

"yeah.. yeah, it's good..".

we stood facing each other in silence for awhile. god knows what she was thinking, but by the way she was looking at me, and her body language... i could tell she was wanting something. she was wanting me. it was her who broke the silence.

"i'll call you..", she mentioned with an inviting smile.

in normal circumstances, in which i would be thinking of sugar first and foremost, i would hesitate to answer. much to my maligned surprise, i said:

"sure. and i'll call you.."

we said our goodbyes, and i was thinking to myself: wiseguy you're on a slippery slope...
----------------------------------------------------------------

i got back home and sugar was already ready to go out. somehow my guilt doubled when i saw she was being so sweet and cheerful; she was genuinely happy that we were going out for ice cream. it was her nature, sugar. to be cheerful when we did things that reminded us of our sweetest memories. in this case, ice cream. every time we have ice cream, she'd take our consciousness way back to that first date. but today, it hurt me because i know i'd be hurting her if she ever found out i lied about today.

we went to the lake gardens afterwards, had ice cream and lazed around on the grassy plains. sugar was being quiet, but also at ease. her face was glowing. she leaned on my shoulder and held my hands. in a way she was apologizing for her recent tantrums by being all manja and sweet.

i, on the other hand, was thinking about today. about what i just did. in essence, i just betrayed the trust of my wife. i was trying to save my own skin and forget my own troubles. i felt like i was at the crossroads of something big. what would tomorrow bring..? at that moment i felt horrible: because having sugar here so close with me, my wife, i felt so lucky and i felt my deep love for her; and yet i was also worried as i knew she'd get moody and short-tempered again because of the whole having a baby thing... and i didn't want that.

but ultimately i felt horrible because i knew i was going to lie to sugar again; i wanted to see rosebud again.

sigh.

God, if this is a test, grant me strength to get through this...

Three

a narrative, in the first person, from wiseguy.

3 weeks later...
==================

i am a terrible person. i think i have become the very person i swore not to become. i have become a cheater, a liar. i feel horrible about it, and yet i cannot seem to stop. what is going on inside my head..?

over the past few weeks... i have been seeing rosebud often. a few times a week. and everytime i went to see her, of course i had to make up stories to you. once it was i had to do inventory at the restaurant. she should have known better; my brother is in charge of that. and one lie came after the other.

it sucked all the more because you were still irritable and twitchy. but i could tell and see you were trying hard not to be that way. since these past few weeks, there were moments when i was reminded all over again why i fell in love with and married you in the first place. like, last week, i came home from work (genuine work.. i can't believe i have to explain myself..!) and there was dinner on the table and a beautifully made drawing of us; your work. the drawing was based on a photograph of us on our honeymoon. when i saw it my heart melted; you then proceeded to treat me like a king that night, and we had spent the night doing nothing else but indulging in each other well into the wee hours.

and just 3 days ago as i was finishing up the busy lunch shift at the restaurant, i got a delivery of a bouquet of roses and carnations with a card saying "defying convention syg: i'm giving u flowers!". i'm not the usual sap for bouquets, but that particular one from you really brightened my day.

we were still fighting much more than we usually do... when i confided to my brother he told me it was not unusual; that every couple would go through the proverbial 'asam garam' of marriage and a relationship. he told me all i had to do was believe, be patient, and stand my ground through times like these. when i called up cookie to confide to her, she told me to give you some time, as, being a woman, of course you were caught up in the need and desire to bear children. (cookie, by the way, is engaged to snickers; he was a bright, upcoming doctor at HUKM; but that's a story for another day..).

what i didn't tell to my brother and cookie though, was the fact i was seeing an ex without your knowledge. which brings me to rosebud.

whenever i went to see her, first i'd feel incredibly loathsome towards myself, but then i'd be somewhat cheered up when i finally saw her in the flesh. happy? not really, as the image of you would be playing in mind. mentally i was comparing rosebud to you everytime we met... and, i don't know if i have any right to say this, but you're far the better, sweeter person for me. so why am i doing this then?

was i bored? did 7 years of being with you cause me to feel bored? maybe it was your recent grumpiness and the loss of your usual sugary self? i did not know. i still genuinely loved you; but it feels as if i myself has tainted this love i have by seeing another woman. i was being stupid. i know.
-------------------------------------------------

now here i am, at Starbucks SS15 Subang Jaya, waiting in a plush chair, pondering these thoughts as i saw my date buying 2 frappes at the counter. i was deep in thought. my date, yes. rosebud. i had mixed feelings for her; it was attraction, i do not deny, but i don't know what was i attracted about: her, or was it just because i was trying to escape a girl of whom i had made an angel of, a girl i was turning to fear because she was losing her shine?

rosebud walked over to me, her smile gleaming. we had been on several dates these past few weeks; and she had gotten more confident in her nuances. once, whilst i was driving, she leaned her head on my shoulder and said had said it reminded her of 'old times'. i had let that pass, but then i feigned trying to look for something in the dash to dissuade her.

"heyy darls..", she said as she handed me my frappe. she took a seat in the plush chair opposite mine. it was late evening; outside, i could see college students and passersby walking around. it wasn't particularly busy yet; a bit later the droves of people would flock to Asia Cafe.

rosebud and i made small talk as we drank our frappes. small talk then evolved into flirting, and i had to keep telling myself to stop! stop it dammit..! more than once my mind wandered off to you. my eyes would go blank and rosebud had to snap her fingers at me to jerk me back to reality. suddenly she took my hand.

"don't you miss this wiseguy?", she smiled.

"miss this..?", i tried to avoid answering.

"yeah this. don't you think us meeting again after so many years has meaning? that maybe the love we had back then was really true..?"

i kept silent. she must have took this as an agreement from me. she smiled again.

"we never really broke up officially right..? i mean, i had to move away. it wasn't our call, right wiseguy? sayang..?", she said.

her calling me 'sayang' struck a note in my heart. i thought of you again. rosebud stroked my hand. when she saw i was still being silent, she continued.

"i think all this time, i never stopped loving you. i mean, when i saw you the other day, it hit me so hard that i had missed you all this time.. didn't you miss me sayang?", she said. "and haven't we had great times these past few weeks? just like dulu-dulu, right?"

she smiled; my mind was going blank; but something was starting to clarify.

"wiseguy..", rosebud said. i looked her in the eye.

"wiseguy, i want to be with you again. we can make this work", she said and took both my hands in hers now. again, i stared into her eyes as she smiled sweetly at me.

a turning point, then; rosebud had just said she wanted to be with me again. what was i to do..?
-------------------------------------------------------

an eternity seemed to pass as rosebud said she wanted to be with me again, and an eternity passed as she held my hands; all while i was staring, almost stoically, into her eyes. i smiled, probably my best, my most charming smile, at her. she smiled back, barely hiding the eagerness and hope in her eyes.

i smiled back at her, genuinely, not faking, and i grasped both her hands in mine, gently touching those fingers.

"wiseguy..?", she said.

i took a deep breathe, still with that best of smiles carved on my face, and said:

"no."

for a moment it was as if something crumbled physically in the lines of rosebud's face. as if her hope had shattered with all the subtlety of wine glasses being shot with with 12-gauge shotgun. but it was only for an instant; she covered up as best as she could, and repeated what i had said in a question.

"no?", she said, with the faintest hint of hope in the tone.

i let go of her hands, looked down at my own, and slowly sighed and let out a breathe; my hands were shaking. that smile on my face had dimmed into one of sad sweetness. i closed my eyes; when i opened them i saw rosebud was still staring at me, awaiting an answer.

"no..", i said.

"what do you mean? no to what? us?", she asked.

"yes.. no to us.."

"but why? i thought we were... reigniting something..?"

again i took a deep breathe; but my heart was calm, and i have never felt surer, or more at ease and confident, when i told rosebud:

"rosebud.. i am married", i told her. and i choked back a tear as i said: "and i love my wife.. so much.."

when i said that, images of you came flying into my mind and heart. in the space of a few seconds, i was reminded of everything i loved about you; images and thoughts and memories of you flooded my mind, heart and soul until i felt so overwhelmed. i saw you as that hot girl in glasses with a sweet tooth who matched me for wit back when i first knew you; i saw you as that adorable, manja, funny and sassy girl when we dated; i saw you as the devoted, loving, incredibly sweet and caring woman you had become ever since we got married. every bit of memory we shared came rushing to my senses, in every intricate detail; i remembered the pink nikes you wore on our first date; the two pistachio ice creams you had; i remembered that night a week after our marriage when we had spent it at the beach in PD; i remembered how you made me make you nasi lemak for breakfast the morning after; i thought of that night when you had put my hand to your bosom and asked me if i could feel your heart beating; i remembered the time you gave me your diary to read... but the most clear memory was that night in the rain; when you had asked me to hold you close and tight because you wanted to tell me that you loved me too...

"wiseguy, you're married? are you serious? then what was all this?", rosebud said as she broke my chain of thoughts. there wasn't anger in her tone or expression; but bewilderment.

"your eyes are watery wiseguy..", she said.

i looked at her, not bothering to wipe at my eyes. she was looking at me with a mixture of confusion and bewilderment.

"i can't live a lie rosebud. and i don't want to lie. and i have to be fair, to you, to me... to Sugar", i said.

"Sugar?"

i smiled. "my wife. the love of my life.."

i went on, and told her the story of you and me. i told her almost everything since the days back in college, and through the days we dated, got married... and i told her about these past few months. about how i was getting jaded and afraid that you were turning into something else.

much to my relief, and in fact, amazement, rosebud took all of this with grace. i could see she was genuinely sad, but something in her eyes told me she also understood. i showed her a picture of you and i that i always, always carried in my wallet. she smiled, sadly but beautifully, when i showed her that.

"i'm sorry rosebud..", i said.

she took a breathe. "it's alright..", she said. "i understand... and i'm proud of you at this moment.."

"proud?", i asked.

"wiseguy", she gave a laugh. "look at me. i know i'm attractive. i'm hot. i could have any guy i wanted, haha.."

i looked at her, puzzled. "how does that make you proud then..?"

"because you stayed true to who you really loved. a lesser man would have given in.. if this is a test Allah is giving you... you passed..", she said. and by her saying that, it struck me how i could have said 'yes, i want you too rosebud' but i didn't. she was right; i had faced temptation, had probably given in, but i had saved myself. my love for you, sugar, prevailed.

"will you be alright dear..?", i asked her.

"i will..", she said, and took my hands again. "now don't worry about me. i think whatever part i was intended to perform, i have done. it's time you go back to her, and stay with her, til whatever end."

i smiled at her. was i lucky, then, to be in this situation? what is Fate, after all..?

"by the way you told me... i know how much you love your wife..Sugar..", she said.

"i do..but i'm still sorry to you.. you know..", i said.

"you don't have to be. things happen for a reason, right?"

i nodded, smiling. we sank back in our chairs, and let a moment of silence pass us by. in it whatever topsy turvy emotions i felt were straightened out again. and in it, rosebud and i became just friends. i would probably never see her again after this.

"you should be going home..", she said.

"i should..", i said, not really trying to say stuff like 'its ok, i can hang about' etc.

she got up from the chair, and i stood up to leave. surprisingly, she came to me and gave me a brief hug.

"be with her. you know this now: you and her will last all time, insyaallah, amin..", she said. i took that in, and amin-ed it myself.

"you take care..", i said as i took leave. rosebud just smiled as answer. she lifted a hand and waved her fingers. i waved back, and stepped out of Starbucks SS15 Subang Jaya. as i walked to my car, my pace quickened; i almost skipped my way there. for some reason, i was feeling refreshed, renewed: rejuvenated. i felt as eager as that night i first drove out to pick you up for our first date. i got to my car, and drove back to KL. along the way i stopped at a florist, picked up a bouquet of roses and carnations; i also stopped by a candy shop and bought you those big, all-day-sucker lollipops i knew you love so much. i could hardly wait to get home to be with you.

when i arrived, i almost jumped out of my car. i pressed the elevator button to go up to our apartment floor, but found it irritatingly slow. so i leaped up the stairs, only to realize that in my eagerness i forgot to lock my car; so i went down again, pressed the remote to lock the car, and ran up the stairs to our 6th floor apartment. i fumbled my keys as i was opening the door, and almost stumbled into the doorway.

"sayang..!", i called out as i kicked off my shoes and closed the door behind us.

"what?", you said as you came out of the kitchen, wiping your hands. your hair was tied up in a bun, and there were specks of flour on your glasses; the smell of cookies wafted in through the kitchen.

i walked to you, gave you the bouquet, and before you could even say a word, i took you in my arms and gave you a long, deep kiss. i hugged you tight, lifted you off the floor and spun you around in my arms. you were laughing sweetly.

"wiseguy, what..?", you said, your voice echoing sweetly in my ears. i embraced you from behind, and kissed you softly just below your ear.

"i love you sayang.. and believe me, we'll have a family, and we'll have a happy one at that", i said. you turned around and slung your arms on my neck. you gave me a kiss.

"i know you love me because i love you too..", you said. you put your head to my chest.

"sayang", i said. "i'm sorry if you thought i wasn't being enthusiastic about having a baby. and i'm sorry if i've been seemingly busy these past few weeks.."

"truth is, i was afraid.. i want to start a family with you sweetness; but i was becoming afraid because you were turning moody and you weren't being yourself..", i said.

"i'm sorry about that sayang.. i'm working on it..", you said softly.

"it's alright.. i am here with you. and i'll be here with you, for you all the way.. i realize now i didn't have to be afraid.. it's only natural, right..?"

you hummed your agreement.

"and when rosebud said she wanted to be with me again, i realized then that all i wanted in my life is you..", i said.

a sudden pause; an awful realization.

"rosebud...?", you said. i didn't answer straight away.

"rosebud wanted to be with you again?", you said again. you broke our hug, and stepped backwards. the bouquet was still in your hands.

i looked at you. in my... excitement, i had forgotten all about what a terrible person i had been these past few weeks. i wanted to say something.. but all i had at this moment was silence. you were staring at me, your eyes narrowed. when you spoke there was a smoldering anger in your voice.

"who. is. rosebud..?", you said through gritted teeth. "and what. do. you. mean. by 'rosebud wanted to be with me' again..?"

of all the mistakes i've made in my life, recent or ages ago, this would be my costliest. truth hurts; even if it may set you free. my truth was realizing i was still, and would probably always be, in love with you. that truth set me free; but the next one will hurt in so many ways.

i finally found a voice.

"sugar.. i can.. elaborate..explain..", i stammered. fear creeping through my bones.

you thrust the bouquet into my hands. the point where you had been holding them was crushed; you had gripped them hard. you looked at me, your eyes burning straight into mine, piercing the fabric of my heart and soul.

with a seething rage, you stomped back into the kitchen.

"you better."

Four

'consequences'
==========================

i walked into the kitchen, where the sound of running tapwater and the bustle of you cleaning up came from. i walked slowly inside and stood at the kitchen doorway. you stood over the kitchen sink, angrily scrubbing some bowls and utensils. you finished, dried your hands, grabbed a tea towel and took out a tray of cookies out of the oven.

"sugar..", i said softly; i was feeling terribly ashamed.

CLANG! you crashed the tray on the kitchen counter. some of the cookies were thrown off the tray. BANG! you slammed the oven door hard. you turned to face me and just stood there, standing as straight as a stick with your hands clenched into fists by your sides. your eyeglasses dropped a bit on the bridge of your nose. a nose i often kissed.

"who. is. rosebud?", you said.

in shame i glanced at my feet. i know i had to answer; but it seems as if my courage has failed me for this one moment. i felt like i just lost my dignity. here is the moment where i have to tell you that for the past few weeks i had lied to you, and in essence i had cheated on you. being able to have resisted further would not be my saving grace; the mere fact i had fallen was enough to label me traitor, even if i had repented.

you walked up to me and shoved me on one shoulder.

"wiseguy you're not mute nor are you deaf. i just asked you, who is rosebud?"

i glanced at you. faint rims of tears were starting to form around your eyes. a glance at your clenched fists showed me you were trembling, most probably out of rage. i tried to reach for your hands but you pulled them away. i had no escape; it's now or never.

"rosebud..", i said. "rosebud is someone i knew.."

you raised your eyebrows. "someone you knew..???"

"i used to see her.. before you.. before us..", i sighed.

"what? so, an ex? did i just hear you right?", you said, your tone quicker than the usual sweet melody i so often hear. you looked down for a moment, and when you raised your head back up the tears were flowing freely. the sight of you crying, and the knowledge that i had caused it, stung me so hard i could have sworn my heart stopped a beat.

"sugar... i can explain..", i said.

"explain then wiseguy", you said through gritted teeth.

and thus i told you about what has been going on these past few weeks. i told you about the time i had gone driving alone after that fight we had, and how, by pure chance, i met rosebud. and as i told you about the time i lied to you for the first time because i had a lunch date with rosebud, i had begun to feel teary as well. i was feeling teary for the hurt heart i knew you were cradling. i told you about the 'dates' rosebud and i went on, and how i had made up stories to you. your own crying worsened by now, and you were sobbing, albeit controllably.. for now.

"but sayang, please forgive me..", i said. "i made the most terrible mistake... and i'm so, so damn sorry sweetness.. i know i've betrayed you.."

you held your hands to your face and cried; we were still standing in the kitchen doorway. i reached out to hold you, but, unsurprisingly, you slapped my arms away and ran off to the living room, screaming "no..NO!!". you hurled yourself on the living room sofa, grabbed a cushion and put it to your face. i walked to you and knelt in front of you.

"sugar..", i said slowly. i have never felt so low in my life. "maafkan saya.."

other than the the sound of you sobbing, the house was silent.

"sugar, i know i have done you great wrong.. but i realize my mistake now.. i won't ever do it again.. sugar, i love you.."

you put down the cushion from your face and looked at me. your glasses had fallen of your face, and i could see your eyes, which, incredibly, remained crystalline and beautiful despite the redness and tears. you bit your lower lip, still crying, and looked at me.

"why?", you said. "why did you do it. why did you lie to me. WHY?", you demanded, before breaking into sobs again. i sighed heavily.

"i.. i was being stupid..", i said.

"OH REALLY? tell me something i don't already KNOW wiseguy", you shot back.

"sugar, i wasn't thinking clearly.. i was.. i was afraid i was losing you.."

"losing me? you were afraid you'd lose me so you went to someone else?", you hissed. and even crying, you could still come up with:

"i don't know what logic you're using wiseguy, but it's obviously NOT of this reality"

i stared into your teary eyes. i opened my mouth to say something, than closed it abruptly. i was thinking about what to say. and i was drawing blanks in my mind, in my thoughts.

"i didn't mean it that way sayang..", i said.

"don't you sayang-sayang me right now..! god, what makes you think you can still call me that right now?!", you scolded at me with hurt in your voice. and i just kept quiet; you had every right to be angry. i had every right to keep my mouth shut. for now. you moaned and sobbed again, and let your body fall on the sofa, and you wept and wept. when i reached my hands out you harshly pushed them away. meraung-raung.

"NO! don't touch me..!", you shrieked and wailed again. you sat up, pushed your head back and looked to the ceiling. those bitter tears streamed down your cheeks, and you did not bother wiping them away. i knelt quietly in front of you, unsure of what to do and what to say, perhaps for the first time in our 7 year relationship. all my 'wit' had ran out of me... not that it would have been much help anyway. suddenly you came and knelt in front of me, and took my hands in yours; but far from holding them gently, you grasped them with all your strength.

"what were you thinking? what in the world were you thinking!!?", you said in an angry hiss. i only looked at you and shifted my gaze away from your burning sight. i felt so at loss, so at odds with you.

"wiseguy!!! TALK TO ME DAMMIT! what in the world were you thinking?! Ya Allahh..!!!

"why, wiseguy? what happened to your promise that you would never hurt me?", you asked.

"i won't, sugar..", i managed to say.

"you just did! you just goddamn did! wiseguy, i trusted you, i trusted you with all my heart and soul and faith. you lied to me, you LIED to me, you LIED to YOUR SUGAR!"

"sayang..", i said.

"you lied to my face and CHEATED on me.."

"sugar, i didn't cheat.."

"YES YOU DID..! don't tell me you didn't cheat! you lied to me, and just by lying means you cheated on me. do not tell me otherwise..! you'd be insulting me by telling me otherwise..god, you.."

i sat quiet again. you were still grasping my hands. again you broke into sobs and choked tears; you let go of my hands and put your forehead to my chest. i put my arms around you.

"sugar, please believe me that i'm truly sorry..", i said, when you suddenly, and with surprising violent force, pushed me away.

" being sorry doesn't change the fact you lied and cheated! and not just once..! all those times i stood by you and believed you..!!", you said, barely controlling the volume and anger of your voice.

"what in the world was going on in your head, wiseguy? what did i ever do to you huh?"

at this i returned your gaze fully. at that moment it was as if we were battling our wits against each other, our wills head to head for the first time since we met.

"you became different", i said, in a voice more stern and convicting than i intended.

"what?", you asked, honestly confused. "i became different??"

"yes..", i said. "ever since we made the decision to have a baby... to start a family, you've been moody. you've been grumpy, and you've been losing your usual cheery demeanor.. and don't tell me you don't know that as well..."

"i know that!"

"so i was afraid that i would be losing you in THAT way, sugar. i was afraid you were turning into someone different, someone i didn't know. i was afraid i'd lose the sugar i knew and loved. i didn't want things to change.. so maybe that's why i had a lapse of judgement and went to see rosebud.. maybe i was looking for someone like you again.."

"wiseguy, of course things change..! we made a decision to start a family. you're smarter than this, Ya Allah..! wiseguy!!! of course i'd be too caught up! i'm a woman, wiseguy! you have to let these things be sometimes. and it's not like i wasn't trying to be my usual self. i was trying, wasn't i?"

"i know you were.. but you were still not yourself sugar.. ", i said softly.

"so you were afraid you'd lose me? good god, wiseguy, i'll always be sugar!! i'll always be that person you fell in love with! but think wiseguy: we're not dating each other without a care in the world anymore... Ya Alllah, wiseguy, you, of all people. i can't believe i have to explain this to YOU, of all people!", you said. you were regaining your mental prowess now; the sobbing and crying tide was receding, and full, calculated anger, such was your character, was building momentum. you got up and rushed to the bedroom. i quickly followed suit.

"what if it's not supposed to be this hard, sugar?", i said as i followed you into the bedroom. you had sat yourself in front of the dressing table, and you were rubbing your slightly swollen eyes. then you looked at me through my reflection in the dressing table mirror. you turned around.

"did you seriously think marriage would be an easy thing, wiseguy?", you asked with a hint of contempt.

i flung my arms. "i didn't say that.."

"then what? what wiseguy? apa yang awak tak puas hati sangat?"

"you..!", i snapped.

"well what about me..?!?", you snarled back.

"like i said! you weren't being yourself! you were becoming someone i didn't know..!!"

"maybe i was! but have you ever considered what i was feeling? didn't you see how much i wanted to have a child of our own wiseguy?"

"i saw it. believe me i saw it.. but it didn't mean i was ready to give up the girl i fell in love with.."

"i'm still the girl you fell in love with, you...you IDIOT. but the girl turned into a woman, wiseguy. and i'm sorry if i was being a bit too MATERNAL. is that what you want me to say?!"

"no..!"

"and what gave you the right to LIE and CHEAT on me wiseguy? i could have understood it if you had just been.. been depressed or sad, but you actually went against your own sanctity, your own beliefs when you did that.."

"i told you i'm sorry.. and i came back to you didn't i? i came back to you and told you i wanted to be with you, right?"

you got up from the dressing table chair and walked up to me. i thought you were going to slap me or something, but instead you said softly.

"do you know how much i love you?"

i looked at your beautiful, tear stained face and turned the other way.

"next question: do you know how much you've hurt me?", you said. you went to the bed and sat there.

"look..", i began. "i know what i did was wrong.. ". you looked at me, your face a mask of fury and disbelief.

"you're damn right it was..", you said. i ignored that remark. i went on.

"but you have to understand.. i was afraid. like i said, i was confused and afraid that i was losing my Sugar.."

you shook your head. "you're lousy at excuses, wiseguy.."

"well, what do you want me to say huh?!", again, i snapped. "argh. it's all this stupid having a baby thing. if it's gonna be like this, we might as well just forget about a little wiseguy or a little sugar! baik tak payah, tau tak?!"

as soon as i said that i regretted it. i realized it was the worst thing i could say; it was probably worse than the revelations to you that i had lied and cheated; it almost confirmed an accusation you made in anger a few weeks back that i didn't really want a child. the sad thing was i did want it have a baby with you; but with what i just said, i had probably hurt you deeper than i ever thought i would be capable of.

you were silent. your head was slightly bowed down. your hands gripped the sheets of the mattress, shaking. fresh teardrops fell from your eyes, and stained your lap.

"sugar, i didn't mean that..", i attempted to begin the apology.

"leave", you said.

"leave?"

"LEAVE!", you suddenly shouted at the top of your lungs. you got up, pushed me aside and went out of the bedroom. you rummaged through the key basket we kept near the door. you finally found what you were looking for: my set of the housekeys, your set, and my car keys. i walked towards you, holding my hands out.

"sugar, i'm sorry..", i said.

you thrust the car keys in my hand. but you held on to the housekeys. you were sobbing hoarsely. in the lines of your face, i could almost physically feel the hurt i had just inflicted on you. the lying, the cheating, the sudden statement. you held a hand to your mouth, and in a muffled, tear choked voice you said again:

"leave..". your breathe came in hitches.

"sayang, please.."

"I SAID LEAVE!", you shouted. "JUST LEAVE! LEAVE! GET OUT!!"

you opened the door and beckoned me to go. i made one last attempt to say something, a lame attempt at reconciliation, but you pushed me away. some part of me was dying inside; i could feel it. i walked to the open door, heavy hearted, with heavy footfalls. the sudden stillness in the air made it even more of a burden.

"put your shoes on and just LEAVE!", you said.

i did as you said, and as i stood in the open doorway, i looked at you.

"sug--"

slam. the door closed on me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

outside the door, 1645hrs
:
i kept calling your name. i kept saying i'm sorry. i could hear you crying in the living room. i repeated your name, loud enough so you would hear, but low enough not to bother our neighbours. still, nothing. you kept on sobbing in the living room.

outside the door, 1755hrs:
mr longjohns from the floor above us is taking the stairs down. he says hi to me, and i return the greeting. as soon as he goes out of view, i call your name again. i knock on the door, repeatedly, calling out your name, saying i was sorry. the only response i got was a sudden hard THUD on the door. that's all. i start calling your cellphone every 5 seconds. but you turned it off. when i started ringing the house, it got cut off. you must have disconnected the line.

outside the door, 1905hrs:
"sayang, please open the door.. we can talk this over..", i said at the door. i thought i could hear the shuffle of your feet close, and i wished hard the door would open, or at least unlock. but nothing. false hope. i continue calling your name.

outside the door, 1940hrs:
mrs tumbleweeds, her husband and children, our next door neighbours, arrive at their own doorstep. they say hi to me and ask me if i was okay. i must have looked awful to them. i said i was fine, and just mentioned that you and i were having some 'little problems'. mrs tumbleweeds nodded her sympathy and asked me if i wanted anything. i politely declined. they went inside their own apartment, but not before inviting me in. again, i declined.

outside the door, 2017hrs:
mrs tumbleweeds husband, mr porcelain, comes out and hands me a cup of coffee. i welcomed this. we chatted awhile, and he gave me some 'useful marriage tips'. i amused him for awhile, then he went back inside. i thanked him for the coffee. he told me to not to give up. i alternate between knocking on the door, calling your name, dialing your phone. no such luck. i write 'i'm sorry' on scraps of paper i found in my wallet, and push it under the door. no response.

outside the door, 2135hrs:
i lean on the door, and rhythmically knock my head on it. i was feeling mentally tired now. but still i kept on calling your name. my phone went dead a few minutes ago. i rummage through my wallet again. i found an RM10 note with the phrase 'if you believe in love, there's always hope for a better tomorrow' written on it. i cheered up a bit. surely this would soften your heart? i add "sayang, i'm sorry" on the note and push it under the door again.

outside the door, 2137hrs:
the note gets pushed back from under the door: it's in pieces now.

outside the door, 2215hrs:
i lean on the door again. but i'm tired. i call your name in infrequent, tired bursts. my head is sore from me knocking it on the door. still, nothing. i fell asleep..

outside the door, 2349hrs:
i woke up when i thought i heard the lock turning. turns out it was just mrs tumbleweeds checking to see if i was still out. she sympathized, and offered me to stay at her place for the night. mr porcelain also came out, and again he gave me a cup of coffee. the drink gave me a bit of warmth and strength. but i had to decline their offer. after a few moments, i told them they should get their own rest. i thanked them, and told them i would be alright. they smiled sadly at me.

outside the door, 0006hrs:
i stood outside the door. my hand stopped just as i wanted to knock on it. i sighed, and felt this deep pain and heartache inside my chest. sighing deeply, i grabbed my car keys, and took the stairs down. i got into my car, and drove for the nearest 24hr mamak shop.

i had a big meal there; i was famished. i thought of going to my brother's house, or my parents' but no. this isn't the time yet. besides, it would be inappropriate, even if they are family. i decided to sit out at the mamak shop for awhile, ended up drinking 6 glasses of teh tarik, and started feeling a bit sick. i couldn't think of anyplace to go.

i paid for my meal and drinks, went back to the car, filled up at the nearby petrol station. i also bought 5-6 bottles of red bull and loads of sweets; chewing gum, hacks, etc. i didn't really know what i was doing. but i had to be doing something. i washed my face at the petrol station's restroom, and afterwards put 6 sticks of wrigley's spearmint in my mouth. feeling a bit freshened up, if mentally strained, i got into my car, tuned in to my favorite radio station, and went for a long, long drive.

to where, i did not know. i wished i could drive back in time.

Talking With An Alternate You

eventually..
=================

i started to drive around; at first in circles around Kuala Lumpur. it was late at the hour, and i wasn't a nightlife sort of person, hence, i did not go to KL's popular nightspots. instead i just took the car through the arteries and veins of KL which would normally be choked if this had been daytime. but here, late, the roads were mostly clear and quiet. i drove through Bukit Bintang.. Jalan Ampang.. Bukit Nanas.. all while humming, absently, to the tunes being played by the radio. Jefferson Starship's 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us' came on. sometimes i wonder what do the DJ's who get nightshift do; put on a stack of CDs and doze off? no matter.

"..and we can build this dream together, standing strong forever, nothing's gonna stop us now...", sang Jefferson Starship.

the aimless driving in KL finally got bored for me; i needed a place to go, to maybe rest a moment. i chugged back a can of red bull, and munched on a chocolate bar. finally i saw a signboard reading 'KLIA'. why the hell not? i thought to myself, and headed for the nearest highway.

as i drove on those quiet highway lanes, i thought of you. i thought about what had just transpired last night. the image of your crying, hurt face kept emerging in my mind; these ghost images would change and morph into memories. sweet ones, bad ones. but memories all the same. i thought of the things that made you beautiful, and i thought of the reasons why i fell in love with you, and of the reasons i still love you. as my car cruised along the open lanes, i thought of how much i felt like holding you in my arms. how much i wanted to apologize... i would have done anything to mend the mistakes i had made over the past few weeks.. but time cannot be reclaimed. and mistakes cannot be undone..

i decided to backtrack; going to KLIA would only remind me of you. how? well, ever since we got married we had been saving money so we could go perhaps on a 2 week long trip around the world. top on our list: Santorini, Greece. so i decided that airports and airplanes would remind me of you, and i had just hurt you last night more than i have ever hurt you in our 7 years together. so no, i erased KLIA off my plans.

it was about 0300hrs now. i wasn't really tired. i was being fueled by caffeine and (ironically) sugar from those red bulls and candies i had bought. i stopped by another petrol station to go to the toilet, and used the payphone nearby to call you. your phone was turned off. i thought of calling the house, but decided against it. you probably wouldn't answer anyway.

maybe it was the mental agony, but i quit driving around like a fool, drove back to the apartment. as i killed the engine, i paused; what was i going to do now? i had no house keys; they were with you. i suppose i could ring the bell or knock on the door. but i didn't want to wake you up; and you probably weren't in the mood to answer the door anyway. i considered these options. none of them were good. i slept in the car.
----------------------------------------------------------

except i couldn't fall asleep. one; i was thinking too much about you. i was worrying about you. i wondered what were you dreaming as you slept, if you even slept at all. i wondered if you were still crying; i also had these bad thoughts that you were tearing up our pictures together, or setting my stuff, our stuff, on fire. i thought about the things i had done these past few weeks. i felt so sorry towards you. i felt i owed you a million apologies... perhaps more. sitting alone in my car, the full weight of the wrongs i had done to you finally set in on me. it felt like i was holding the world up on my shoulders, like Atlas did in Greek mythology as punishment for waging war on Olympus.

the hours ticked away. i tried switching on my phone; the battery recovered a bit. some texts came in. most of them were from friends or from people at the restaurant. there was one from you; much to my hurt, it read:

"DON'T CALL ME. I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU"

i sighed, felt my heart shatter a bit. i chucked the phone on the passenger seat, reclined mine, and put an arm across my forehead. and yet sleep still did not come. maybe it was all the junk food. or maybe it was the burden on my mind. the azan for subuh prayers came on, melodically. i got out of the car and made my way to the surau in our apartment compound, about a 5 minute walk from our block. i didn't join the jemaah; instead i performed my prayers alone, and when i finished i sat there on the sejadah, reciting some prayers. i prayed for this to be done and over with, most of all, and that may Allah forgive me for all my wrongs. i prayed for you; i prayed for your soul.

i finished and just sat there. a moment later the jemaah finished and most of the people who came made their ways back home; some stayed for the usual 5 minute tazkirah. i leaned at the back wall of the surau and kept quiet. soon everyone left except for the caretaker, who smiled at me and said assalamualaikum. i answered and said i wanted to sit a while, to which he motioned at me to take my time. sitting there, alone, in the pleasing quiet of the surau, i fell asleep, just as the sun was about to rise and bring light to the land.

when i woke up i felt dazed; the caffeine probably. i glanced at my watch and saw it was about noon. i shook my head, as if my eyes or my watch was wrong. but no. it was noon. i had taken a long 'nap' in the surau. i went to the toilet and freshened up a bit; i found a pack of spearmint chewing gum in my pocket and crammed 3 pieces in my mouth. i decided to go out and have some lunch; come back to the surau for zohor; after that i'd go up to the apartment... to try and see, if you would open the door

i went back to the car and went out to the nearest McD's. i grabbed a bite there, and drove back to the apartment. you were on my mind all the time. i knew i had to resolve this. but first i went back the surau, and this time i joined the small jemaah that was there for zohor. i needed to be calm; i couldn't afford to snap and say something i'd regret later on again. when the prayers were finished, i walked back to our apartment block. i still felt tired. but i didn't want to hold this off.

as i got out of the elevator at our floor and stepped up to the door, i paused a moment. what was i to say? what apology could i carve with my words? would you still be angry? of course you would. this isn't like the time i accidentally threw away your maroon leather shoes because i thought you didn't fit them anymore. a heart isn't a tangible object, although it could be broken.. and mended, if you knew how.

i took a deep breathe and rapped my knuckles on the door. i waited a few minutes. nothing. i knocked again, and called out your name. this time i heard the sound of footsteps coming in. i could imagine you looking through the peephole at me.

"sugar..?", i said. nothing. "sugar..?", i repeated. then a knock on the door. it wasn't what i wanted, but at least it was a response.

"sugar..", i started. "i know you're still mad at me.. but please, open the door sayang, we can talk this over.."

BAM! a hard thump on the door. then i heard muffled crying.

"sayang please don't cry..." , i said. i was leaning with my hands on the door. in my head i could see you slumped at the bottom, crying. it made me feel all the more sorry for you.

"sugar, sayang.. please, let me in..", i said. "sweetness, i'd do anything, just name it.."

and then from behind the door, in a tearful but clear, if slightly dampened, voice, you said:

"turn back the clock to a month ago. can you do that?"

"sugar, that's just being silly..", i said.

"oh so that's silly? tell that to yourself..", you said.

"don't do this sugar.."

"don't do this? you brought this upon yourself, dammit..!!"

"i know that! but i'm sorry. i'm sorry.. can't you forgive me?"

"tell me this wiseguy; can you forgive yourself?", you asked. i stood silent at this. because it was then i realized i couldn't.

"i can't.. but i can swear this won't ever happen again..", i managed to say.

"you broke my trust wiseguy. how do you think i could put my faith back in you..? if you, someone whom your best friend cookie said is the most honest person when it comes to love, could do what you did.. how do you expect me to have faith..?", you said angrily.

"look, can't we just take this inside? nanti our neighbours dengar..tak segan ke..?"

"are you serious? nak segan kat neighbours? wiseguy, you have bigger things to be ashamed of, you idiot."

again, i was stunned into silence. the weight i felt on my chest grew heavier by the minute.

"you lied. you cheated. and you don't want a family. you betrayed me...", you said, and i heard you break into tears again.

"don't say that sayang..", i said. i put my forehead to the door now. how i wish i could see you then! i had this urge to beg and grovel at your feet for forgiveness. i wanted to be there with you, and do your every bid, and fulfil your every whim and fancy. anything to get back in your good graces and out of this bullshit.

there was silence for a moment. suddenly the door opened; you stood there and i saw you were still wearing last night's clothes. your eyes were puffy and your nose red. i thought you were finally going to let me in. instead you thrust a bundle of clothes; my clothes, into my hand.

"go away. leave me alone."

you slammed the door in my face. again.
------------------------------------------------------

i sighed and fought the urge to break down and weep. i couldn't feel angry because i know i had no right to. i threw aside the bundle of clothes you had given. for a few minutes i didn't know what to do. i tried knocking on the door again. but you didn't come to the door. you had probably gone off to the bedroom and closed the door. another few minutes passed. i stood there, like a stupid person, and finally went to the elevator. as i got in and the doors closed, i hoped so much that the apartment door would open and you would let me in. but it never opened.

i got back to the car, got in and started the engine. i reversed out of my parking spot and sped out of the apartment complex. i drove and i drove around KL, barely registering what i was doing, going about purely on instinct. i must have been driving in a hazed state as well, as more than one motorist blared their horn at me and shook their fists my way as they passed by.

in my heart i was feeling lost. i didn't know what to do. i wanted to tell someone, but who? i was too ashamed to tell anyone about how all this had transpired in the first place. and even if i did, i could not expect them to empathize or sympathize for me. i was the one who caused the hurt, i was the one who turned traitor to my beautiful wife. i deserved punishment. maybe this was it.

suddenly i realized i was passing by our old college, the place where we first laid eyes on each other, 7 long years ago. i swerved into the entrance junction, narrowly missing a motorbiker who, in his panic, managed to kick my side door as he passed by. i ignored it, and drove to the college entrance. it was about 1640hrs, and i could see some students getting ready to leave, and some students just hanging about, chatting with each other. i could also see some college sweethearts holding hands and talking to each other. just like us back then. when we began dating, we'd meet up after classes and hold hands and i'd drive you back, or maybe we'd go to the cafe nearby, where i first told you i love you.

the cafe. i took my car there and parked nearby; in fact the very same parking spot i used 7 years ago, on that night i professed my love for you. that rainy night that made us. as i turned off the engine, deja vu; a tropical climate dictates that Malaysia has lots of rain, and now, here it comes. through the windshield i saw the patrons of the cafe; some yuppies, some families. but most of them were students of the college we went to together. i could see them now, talking, laughing. they seemed so young and free. i envied them for a moment. i thought of our days back here. we had laughed and talked and hung around with our friends, just like these students i was looking at were doing.

suddenly the pain in my heart caught up with me. i bit my lower lip, fighting the upcoming tears. but i failed. i broke down crying just as the rain became heavier and pounded the roof of my car. i cried and put my forehead to the steering wheel.

"sugar, i love you. i'm so sorry.."

i kept saying that to myself. i closed my eyes.

the world went black.
----------------------------------------------------------------

the sound of cars passing by. the sound of rain hammering the steel roof of my own vehicle. i opened my eyes and saw it was already dark. i must have fallen asleep again. i raised my wrist to glance at my watch, only to find i didn't have it on. did i leave it somewhere? i dismissed it as unimportant. outside it was still raining heavily. the lights at the cafe were on, and i could see an entirely new batch of patrons having their dinner or evening meal there. i squinted my eyes for a better view through the windshield; i realized there were familiar faces at the cafe. i saw some of my classmates; and some of your classmates, and some of our other friends.

are they having a reunion or something? i thought, puzzled, and a little dumstruck. what the hell? as i looked at the table they were at, my eyes were drawn to someone sitting at the far end, to the left. it was you.

i pulled the handle of my car door, and annoyingly it wouldn't give until i gave it a little shove. odd. but that would have to wait. i locked the car and ran across the street through the rain to get at the cafe. another car passing by splashed a puddle of water at me. but i didn't care. all i wanted was to talk to you, and ask for your forgiveness.

when i came at the table, the friends greeted me. there was lucky and drophead, from my photography course. there were the 3 girls from english class; cupcake, javelin and cremeria. there was also arrows, the college 'it' guy, of whom all the girls wanted to date and all the boys wanted to be. we weren't that close, but again, i dismissed it as unimportant. i made my way straight to you, in my wet clothes. i saw you were smiling again as you were chatting with your former classmate, tingles. when i made my way to you most of our friends stared at me quizzically. they must have been wondering why we didn't come together.

"hey tingles, haven't seen you in awhile..", i said to tingles, who looked at me for a moment like i had another person growing out of my cheek or something, and said hi in awkward way. "do you mind if i could speak to sugar alone, for a minute?".

tingles say sure, go ahead. i sat myself opposite you. all of our friends looked at us. you had on a blue cardigan sweater and jeans. you looked... different. brighter, sweeter somehow. how were you hiding what happened yesterday, i couldn't tell. that you were even here was strange enough. maybe you came to take your mind off things. and maybe Fate decided that i coincidentally be here at the same time, so we could work things out.

"sugar..", i said.

"uhm, yeah wiseguy..?", you said with such convincing innocence. i couldn't believe it. i would have preferred it if we were alone, but if this has to be it, the this has to be it. at least, you were talking to me.

"sugar, i'm sorry for all things i did.. i'm truly sorry. i swear, i will never hurt you again. i swear i'll do anything to keep you happy, until the end of my days here in this world. please forgive me sugar; i'll do anything you ask me to, absolutely anything. i just want to see you smile at me again. sugar, i love you.."

you looked at me, your eyes wide open, and your jaws slack. the table had gone quiet, and our friends were looking at us. i reached out to hold your hands, but you pulled them back; but you did it slowly, as if you weren't really comprehending.

"you don't have to pretend; i don't care if the guys here know.. i'm just sorry..", i said.

you stared at me, almost studying me; then you said:

"sorry for what..?"

i paused, looked at you.

"wiseguy.. if you're talking about the way we jest with words, the wisecracks and sarcastic jokes we always pull off on each other, don't worry about it lah!", you said. "i think it's fun to have someone to spar with, haha.."

this was getting weird. suddenly mr. college it guy, arrows, walked over and sat beside you. he looked at me, his expression confused but curious.

"you just told me that you loved me wiseguy..", you said, the sentence bordering on being a question. "i seriously hope this is a prank you're pulling on me.. you know i'm going out with arrows right?"

i looked at the guy. and i looked back at you. arrows put his arm around your slim waist. i know what that meant: this better be a joke or else..

"oi kau demam ke apa..?", one of the guys at the table said, to the laughter of the others. you and arrows laughed along.

finally i joined in the laughter. i was realizing something. and feeling really stupid, but curiously at ease, as if it was the most natural thing in the world to say, when i said it, i said:

"dammit. i can never pull of the 'i love you' gimmick at anyone. you got me back sugar. arrows, you're lucky she didn't fall for it, or you'd be single, and i'd be dead.."

this enticed laughter around the table. even arrows, who looked ready to defend his 'domain' like a male lion, laughed back and slapped me on the shoulder. and yet, his laughter seemed forced.. but screw that. all of the people, our friends, were in a relaxed mood. i looked at them. they were younger looking, more carefree. i knew why by now, of course. food was ordered around the table. mee goreng, nasi goreng, burger ramly. drinks were served. teh-o-ais-limau, cokes, sirap bandung. i joined in the casual conversations. i found out that i had just as much to talk about as any of them. and yet i kept stealing glances at you as i sipped my drink and poked at my mee goreng. you were seated next to arrows, and you looked.. happy as can be. arrows was being the perfect gentleman to you; he joked with you, held your hands. the usual..

i was feeling a quiet relief in my heart. i felt like i had just got back from a spectacular holiday. the kind you wished never ended and you'd always remember, but also that you're glad you're home, you know? but there was also a deep sadness at the same time. this sadness came with my own inner comprehension...

after a couple of hours most of our friends left. lucky amiably shoved my on head and told me not to miss class tomorrow, it was a field day. i nodded. finally it was only you, arrows and me left at the table. you both excused yourselves.

"aren't you leaving?", arrows asked me.

"nah, you guys go ahead. i'm meeting someone nearby later on..", i lied.

"alright. see ya dude..", he said and went to his car. you picked up your bag and a file, and smiled at me as you got up.

"see you wiseguy.. and i'm gonna get you back for the prank. for a moment there i almost believed you telling me that you loved me, haha..haha..", you said. your laughter at the end trailing off, as if you decided that the statement wasn't that funny, really. i just glanced at you. you looked beautiful. but i couldn't say that now, could i?

"ehehe.. yeah; i'll see you around sugar..", i said, nonchalantly.

there was a pause between us; i looked into your eyes and you looked into mine. at that moment, i think i relayed something in the way i looked at you. i think you did actually believed in me when i said that 'prank', and you still believed it even when i had said it was just a prank, and i, myself, had laughed it off. and i read something in the way you looked at me. in my mind i hoped your eyes were telling me "wait. i'll be there with you; just wait and see." but no.. instead, your eyes were telling me:

'i'm sorry; but i'm with arrows. and i'm happy'.

"well, bye..", you said and left. i smiled and waved. it was still raining, althought it was a mild drizzle. i watched as you left with arrows. i glanced at my own car: a rustbucket. not something new. i felt a buzz; my cellphone. i took it out. a text from cookie. she said she had just gotten back from a kenduri, and met this amazing guy called jumpers. the name sounded familiar, almost as if i've heard it before, or met the guy somewhere. but when i searched for it in my memory, nothing came.

i ordered a glass of kopi-o, and sat there drinking as the rain fell down from the skies. i sat there for about an hour; by the end of which i had come to my proper senses. i sighed. i paid my part of the bill, and got up to leave. i didn't rush through the rain. i just walked slowly and let it soak me until i was cold to my bones. my mind was in an exceptionally clear state. as i reached my rusbucket of car and opened the door, i glanced behind me, half expecting to hear your voice calling my name, telling me to wait, asking me questions... but of course, it didn't happen..

i got in the car, started the engine and left..
-----------------------------------------------------

as i drove in silence, i thought about us. except there was no 'us'. this was today. not 7 years in the future. i am not a cook at my brother's restaurant; i am Muhammad Rafar, a diploma in photography student, of whom you, and now all the other friends, call 'wiseguy' because i had a penchant for verbal zingers. i called you 'sugar' because you loved sweets; you're Evie Nadia, taking your A-levels at the same college. we never dated; never will..

although i had said otherwise to protect the truth, i was in love with you. i had meant everything i said earlier at the cafe. except for the apologies; i couldn't apologize because nothing ever happened between us. although i had hoped for it to happen, we never stood in the rain with you telling me that you loved me too. we were never at a beach, drinking hot chocolate. we were never having nasi lemak for breakfast. you don't know cookie, my best friend. we never went out on a first date where we had ice cream. i never left you a refrigerator note, nor had you given me a diary to read. and we never had the biggest fight of our lives, because we don't have a life together, and that that 7 years in the future did not and will not happen. we were just college mates. we were just friends, although i know that i love you..

my phone buzzed. a text message, from you.

"hey wiseguy. i'll see u in college okayy? take care.."

that's all it read.

i sighed, not bothering to reply, feeling stupid and saddened by my own fantasies and daydreams. the truth was simple enough. i had been daydreaming; and probably fell asleep doing so, in my rustbucket of a car, in front of the cafe, waiting for the other guys and girls to come. in those vivid, incredibly clear dreams, the love i had for you manifested itself in waves so powerful, i had waken up and believed it for a while. and i almost made a fool out of myself...

i reached home. my parents' home. there was no cozy apartment, never will be. i walked inside the dark house; my parents were asleep, my brother was at campus. i locked the door, went to my room. i took a hot shower. afterwards i crashed on my bed.

i lay awake for awhile, with my arm across my forehead. i thought of you. of how i had gotten to know you some months ago, of how at first i was irritated by you matching my wit. and i thought of how eventually i came to fall in love with you. i sighed aloud. we would never be, you and i. i thought of my dreams again. 7 years compressed in a dream at most 2 hours long. i whispered softly in the dark of my room:

"sugar.."

i closed my eyes and thought of the dreams again, so vivid they were. i realized then, that i had spent moments in time i could never spend in reality with you. in those dreams. just before i fell asleep, i realized there are such things as clarity; i realized:

i had carved an entire fiction, talking with an alternate you.
